It is well known that China is the world's oldest civilization. It is one of the biggest countries in the world. China has an area of about 9.6 million square kilometers which comprises about 6.5% of the world total land area. Its population is 1.3 billion which accounts for 23% of the world's population.
The state of transplantation in China

Kidney transplantation was firstly performed in 1960's in China. Till 1990's, heart, liver, combined kidney pancreas, liver-kidney and heart-lung transplantations had been done in many hospitals nationwide. By the end of 2005, a total of 85,000 transplants had been performed, among which kidney transplants accounted for 74,000, liver around 10000 and heart about 400. China has become the second biggest transplantation country in the world only next to the United States. Kidney transplantation is almost universally successful and recipients can survive long term after the transplants.  The longest survival time for the Chinese kidney transplant recipient has been 28 years, 12 years for liver recipient and 14 years for heart recipient.

Long awaiting list

Since China has the biggest population in the world, so does its population of patients awaiting transplants. Today's major concern is the very inadequate number of organ donors to meet the demand. The awaiting list has become longer and longer. There have now been 1 million end stage renal failure patients in China and the number increased at an average rate of 120,000 a year. Today, 500,000 patients are waiting for kidney transplants, around 100,000 waiting for liver transplants. Unfortunately only a few thousands of them can have transplants every year. At the same time, there have been 4 million Chinese who suffer from leukaemia are waiting for bone marrow transplants most of whom are children.

Having no official transplant recipients organization

Although tens of thousands Chinese are well alive today with organ grafts, we still haven't had an official national transplant recipients organization.  Until now all the activities have been organized by the Chinese Organ Transplantation Society of Chinese Medical Association which only consists of doctors. In 2004,  the 1st Chinese Transplant Games were successfully held in Wuhan. Two years later, in 2006, the 2nd Chinese Transplant Games were held at the same place. The objective of the Games is to promote organ and tissue donation, to provide transplant recipients with opportunity to celebrate the benefits of transplantation and to express gratitude to the families of organ and tissue donors.
